Vacuum Evaporation
The vacuum evaporation treatment process consists of reducing the interior pressure of the evaporation chamber below atmospheric pressure. This reduces the boiling point of the liquid to be evaporated, thereby reducing the heat necessary/eliminated in both the boiling and condensation processes.
Vacuum evaporators are used in a wide range of industrial sectors to treat industrial waste water. It represents a clean, safe and very versatile technology having low management costs, which in most cases serves as a zero-discharge treatment system.
Evaporation Powered by Heat Pump
Single Effect Evaporators with Heat Pump
Single effect evaporators are built with a heat exchanger submerged in the fluid to be processed or, as a customised option, with an outer shell and tubes exchanger.
Evaporation plants can be manufactured in AISI 316 (std. version), duplex - super duplex or PFA coated options dependent on the process application. Should the fluids to be treated be particularly aggressive then the heat exchanger in the standard single effect evaporator can be upgraded to titanium, silicon carbide, fluorocarbon or graphite.
Most vacuum evaporators have the following features:

- Automatic operation.
- Concentrate discharge by pump with operated either automatically from the PLC or by signal from a sensor in the evaporator, without stopping the evaporator running and without losing vacuum.
- Possibility of recycling the processed fluid.
- Automatic antifoam system.
- Sightglass (with cleaning system) to monitor the contents of the tank.
- Ability to sample the distillate and concentrate without stopping the plant.
- A range of model sizes to treat volumes from 600 – 48,000 l/24 hr.

Double and Triple Effect Evaporators with Heat Pump
Double and triple effect evaporators can produce significant reductions in energy consumption when compared to the single effect product range. The savings can be significant – up to 60%.
Power is supplied through a heat pump which employs a particular freon and exploits the thermal power of the fluid, evaporated during the first stage of evaporation, to supply a second and (according to the model chosen) a third stage of evaporation.
These larger evaporation units are available in all of the same materials as the single effect machines and they can process volumes from 7,200 – 96,000 l/24 hr.
Note that the processing volume for a triple effect evaporator starts at 24,000 l/24 hr.

Evaporation Powered by Hot Water or Steam
Significant reductions in the power consumption required for evaporation compared to the traditional heat pump method above can be achieved by selecting an evaporator powered by hot water or steam.
Belmar can supply single, double and triple effect evaporators all powered by hot water or steam.
Single Effect Evaporators Powered by Hot Water or Steam
The single effect range can process volumes ranging from 6,000 – 72,000 l/day and yet the maximum power consumed is just 21kW. This is a significant contrast to the largest single stage evaporator with heat pump where power consumption is 320kW.

Treatment of Highly Concentrated Solutions
A single chamber evaporator is also available which can treat highly concentrated waste that the regular evaporator range could not process. This is achieved by the inclusion of an automatic scraper which keeps the exchange surfaces of the vertical tank thus enabling thicker concentrates to be dealt with.
The concentrate can be discharged either with a membrane pump or through a butterfly valve.
Double and Triple Effect Evaporators Powered by Hot Water or Steam
Larger versions of the above evaporator are available with two or three evaporation stages.
The processing capacity of these bigger machines ranges from 12,000 – 144,000 l/day for the double chamber evaporator and 18,000 – 216,000 l/day for the triple.
